Frequently Asked Questions

Teacher with 3 students
What are your tutors' qualifications?
Our tutors are the most important part of our business (see About Us for our philosophy) and we went to great lengths to find the best and brightest tutors in the
county. All of our tutors went through extensive interviews, reference checks, and background checks in order to be hired as an independently contracted tutor. Unlike most tutoring services, we were not simply looking for anybody to hire as a tutor. As Wake County educators ourselves, we looked for talent, experience, academic expertise, and passion for teaching. As of May 19th, we offered contracts to approximately 30% of those who submitted applications, and of those who indicated interest in working for us, the acceptance rate was approximately 15%. All of our tutors are certified teachers or exceptional academics (honors undergrads, graduate students, advanced degrees, etc.).

How is WakeTutors different from a learning center?
At WakeTutors, our tutors come directly to you. You don't need to drive anywhere (and with the price of gas these days, that's a relief!). Our dedicated and qualified tutors will design a program for your child that is based on your school's curriculum, not a pre-determined program that may not relate at all to what your child is working on in school. We will also stay in contact with your child's teacher, if necessary, to be sure your child is on the right track.

Are there any upfront fees or assessment charges?
No, there are absolutely no upfront fees or charges for assessments (which can cost up to $200.00 in a learning center environment). We believe that assessment should be offered not just in the beginning but should occur on an ongoing basis throughout the tutoring process.

How long do I have to wait to get a tutor assigned to my child?
You don't have to wait at all! WakeTutors.com is the ONLY site that allows you to select a tutor, see when they are available, and schedule and pay for them instantly. We understand how frustrating it can be to wait for a tutor or tutoring service to call you back. It can then take time to make sure that they can fit you into their schedule. WakeTutors allows you to schedule tutors on YOUR schedule. Each of our tutors are exceptional educators who have been carefully selected.

How much does it cost?
We believe in providing the highest quality tutoring service while, at the same time, keeping it affordable for parents. Most of our at-home tutoring rates range from $36-39 and hour with a few upper level subjects at $42. Please see pricing for more information. Our one-on-one in-home tutoring rates are extremely competitive, especially given the level of service you will receive, the resources you will have available as part of our educational community (this is unlike any other tutoring service you will find), and the attention we give to each student.

Does WakeTutors supply any learning materials for the tutoring sessions?
We highly recommend that your child bring home their school books or any other materials they are working on in their class that relates to the subject(s) we are tutoring. Our tutors can provide whatever supplemental material is needed to enhance the tutoring sessions but in most cases, will not supply the curriculum. We strongly believe that effective tutoring should be based upon the Wake County standard course of study and classroom instruction. Each classroom teacher you encounter is different; each classroom teacher will have different expectations. It is counterproductive to assign a fixed curriculum (like you would receive in a learning center) to your child especially since he/she has varying needs and has classroom teachers with varying expectations. Our tutors design their tutoring sessions around making your child successful in the classroom.

Where does tutoring take place?
WakeTutors was designed for your convenience. Our tutors will travel to your home for each tutoring session. For in-home tutoring, we require that a parent or guardian over the age of 21 be at home for the entire tutoring session. If you would rather meet the tutor at a neutral location, such as a public library, that can be arranged.

Can I change tutors at any time?
If you are not completely satisfied with the tutor chosen, we encourage you to choose someone else. The advantage of using WakeTutors.com is that you have the ability to see multiple tutors right on our website and are able to select the one you feel best meets your needs. If you need help selecting a tutor, please call or e-mail us and we will be happy to recommend a tutor.

Are there a minimum number of sessions for which I have to commit and how long is each session?
Unlike some tutoring services, there are no long-term contracts and no minimum number of sessions. We do recommend at least 4 sessions to see the impact our talented tutors can make. We also recommend that tutoring occur on a consistent basis. It is much harder for a student to catch-up if he/she falls behind in a subject area. Every topic that isn't understood makes the next topic that much more difficult to understand and, as you probably already know, this can snowball until the student is so frustrated, they want to shut down. Having a tutor there on a consistent basis allows the student constant backup and support to ensure ongoing success. Our sessions are one hour long. We can definitely accommodate you if you feel you need more than an hour at a time.

Do your tutors work with learning disabled or special needs children?
Yes, many of our tutors are Special Programs certified and will be able to work in conjunction with your child’s I.E.P. or 504 Plan.

I have more than one child. Can you tutor all of them at the same time?
All of our tutoring is one-on-one. In order for our tutors to be most effective, and for your children to benefit the most from our services, our tutors not do teach in groups. Individualized teaching is the backbone of our service.

Do you accept major credit cards?
Absolutely! You have the ability to pay via credit card or Paypal account on our secure website. We will also accept payment over the phone or fax or set-up automatic monthly or bi-weekly payments from your credit card. If you prefer to pay by check, just call or email us and we can arrange it for you.

What geographical areas do you service?
We have tutors available in all of Wake County and it's surrounding areas. If your area is not listed on your profile, please call or e-mail us and we will be happy to find you a tutor.

Do you provide test preparation for the SAT and ACT tests?
Yes, we will prepare your student for both exams. We require that a test preparation book is used. If you don't have one, we can recommend one for you and tell you where you can purchase it at a reasonable price. We highly recommend that you contact us at least six weeks before the test so our tutors have enough time to help your child prepare.

How do I get started?
Register on the website and update your profile. You can then go to our scheduling calendar to see all the tutors that service your area and who teach the subject areas you need tutoring for. From there you can schedule and then pay for your tutoring sessions. You can also contact us at (919) 521-8048 or email us at service@waketutors.com.
